Q. What is tinnitus and what causes it?

A. Tinnitus is defined as an awareness of sound when there is no external source of sound present. It is a signal within the auditory system which is being interpreted by the brain as a sound and is not an imagined sound. There are many things which can trigger tinnitus and not all of them are related to the ears. We always suggest that as soon as you become aware of tinnitus you visit your family doctor to ensure you do not have something simple like a wax blockage in the ears that is causing your tinnitus and also to rule out any other medical problems that might be causing your tinnitus.
